Car Washer Bottle Smell

The screen washer fluid in my vw touareg smells dreadful.

I was driving it at the weekend on a motorway with the aircon off fan off when i used the screen wash a few seconds afterwards a horrible smell of stagnant water came into the car. Is there anything else i can put in that won t destroy my windshield washer pump and or hoses. The best this to do is fill the washer bottle with just boiled water let it fill almost to the top and then fill to the top with screen wash. Smelly screen wash water.

Presumable it s because the cabin air intake is right at the base of the windscreen where all the fluid can seep down and evaporate into the car. Sounds like the last owner of the car did not use screen wash in the windscreen washer bottle.
